Nothing Here

Nothing Here
Agua Caliente California

This is the desert.
There is nothing here.
Nothing.

The road dissolves into horizon.
No billboards. No wires.
No structure but wind.

Sand folds upon itself
Repeating waves
Rippling like silence
learning to breathe.

Here, beauty is found
in the absence of beauty.
No spectacle.
No ornament.
Only contour and light
in barest glimmer.

The sun writes without color.
Shadows drawn in contrast.
Nothing permanent.

In the desert
noise is extinguished.
What can be heard?
a shift of air,
a falcon’s wing,
slight geometry of tracks
pressed into burning sand?

It speaks
but only heightened senses can hear.
A sound in the wilderness
needs no amplifier.
The silence itself
is its auditorium.

Faint fragrance rides the wind
mineral, wet, barely imagined.
Water.
Not seen, but announced.
Miles away, felt
by the smallest betrayal in the air.

Stripped of distraction,
the mind sharpens its edge.
Emptiness like a whetstone
hones the senses

There is nothing here
to grab the attention.
No enticements.
Only thirst
clean, instructive,
honest.

In this wide austerity
what matters becomes clear:

Life
Water
Breath
Direction

And a still small voice
says
seek the way.
